Sharp’s Brewing Co backs world-famous event for fourth year running

Sharp’s Brewing Co is once again the headline sponsor of the World Pilot Gig Championships, set to return to the Isles of Scilly from Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th May 2025.

This marks the fourth consecutive year the Rock-based brewery has sponsored the globally recognised event, which will see over 131 rowing crews from across the world descend on St Mary’s for a weekend of competitive racing and community spirit.

First held in 1990 with just a handful of Cornish crews, the Championships have grown massively over the decades, with teams now travelling from across the South West and beyond to take part in the iconic races.

“Gig rowing is a brilliant team sport that is integral to both the history of Cornwall and to our contemporary culture,” said Oli Carter, Business Development Manager at Sharp’s. “We are passionate about supporting this iconic sporting event, which brings together crews from around the world to compete in the spirit of tradition, teamwork, and endurance.”

“We look forward to an unforgettable weekend of racing, camaraderie, and shared moments on the water.”

Rooted in Cornish Waters

The brewery’s deep ties to the sport go far beyond the annual championships. Sharp’s is a long-term supporter of local gig rowing clubs along the North Coast of Cornwall, including Rock Rowing Club and Padstow Rowing Club, who row on the River Camel estuary, often heading over the Doom Bar – the very sandbar that inspired the name of Sharp’s flagship beer.

Nearby, Port Isaac Rowing Club also receives backing from the brewery. Tide permitting, the club rows out towards Port Quin, Donkey Hole, or uses a gig based at Wadebridge during wild weather to train inland.

The support provided by Sharp’s helps these clubs fund gig refurbishments, purchase new covers, signage, and assist with land-based activities at local regattas and social events.

Tristan Hick, Chairman of the World Pilot Gig Championships, said: “We’re thrilled to have Sharp’s Brewing Co as a lead sponsor for the 2025 Isles of Scilly World Pilot Gig Championships. Their support is invaluable in helping us bring this event to life, uniting rowers and spectators from near and far.”

Celebrating Cornwall’s Connection to Sea and Sport

The team at Sharp’s take pride in their coastal heritage, and the Cornish outdoor lifestyle is central to the brewery’s identity. Their continued support for this event aligns with their brand values of land, sea, and community.
