Rockfall Incident on Kenidjack Valley Coast Path: Injured Hiker Escapes Major Harm

In a surprising turn of events on Friday, 2nd August, a female hiker narrowly escaped serious injury after a rockfall incident on the Kenidjack Valley coast path near St Just. The incident occurred at approximately 13:29, prompting an immediate response from the Lands End Coastguard Search & Rescue Team.

Emergency Response and Quick Coordination

The alarm was raised after the coastguard received a report of the accident, providing them with the injured hiker’s location. The Lands End Coastguard team was swiftly dispatched to the scene, with the Penzance Coastguard Rescue Team also paged for additional support.

Upon arrival, the rescue teams discovered that a rock, estimated to have fallen from a height of approximately 10 metres, had struck the hiker. The rock fell down her leg and onto her foot, causing damage to her toe.

On-Scene Assessment and Medical Care

The injured woman received immediate medical attention from the coastguard team, who assessed her injuries, treated, and dressed the wound on-site. Despite the severity of the incident, the casualty was able to walk back to her vehicle with assistance, where a South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust ambulance was waiting.

Hospital Transfer and Aftermath

After further assessment by the ambulance crew, it was determined that while the woman needed hospital treatment, an ambulance transfer was not necessary. Instead, she chose to make her own way to the hospital for further care.

Once all equipment was packed away, both the Lands End and Penzance Coastguard teams were stood down and returned to their respective bases.

Coastguard’s Vital Reminder

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable dangers present along the coast. The coastguard urges the public to remain vigilant and to immediately call 999 and ask for the Coastguard if they see anyone in danger near the coastline.

The quick response and efficient coordination of the coastguard teams undoubtedly prevented a more severe outcome, showcasing the importance of having well-trained rescue teams ready to respond at a moment’s notice.
