Beloved Seal Ray Passes Away at Cornish Seal Sanctuary

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary has announced the sad passing of Ray, a cherished member of their marine family, leaving the team and visitors heartbroken.

Ray, known for his distinctive personality and joyful spirit, passed away on Sunday evening after battling health issues related to a historical condition.

Despite receiving multiple medical procedures over the last month and showing signs of improvement, Ray’s condition did not progress as hoped. The Cornish Seal Sanctuary’s devoted team, alongside veterinary support, worked tirelessly in their efforts to aid his recovery, but ultimately, Ray did not survive.

Ray’s journey with the Cornish Seal Sanctuary began in 2001 when he was rescued at just a few weeks old. From the moment he arrived, his unique character was evident, capturing the hearts of all who met him. His hospital records are filled with notes highlighting his special qualities, often describing him as ‘goofy’ due to his seemingly constant smile.

His joyful demeanour and trusting nature earned him the affectionate nickname ‘Ray of sunshine’ among the staff and visitors. The Cornish Seal Sanctuary acknowledges that his absence will leave a void that will be deeply felt by all.

In honour of Ray’s memory, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary is setting up an ‘In celebration of Ray’ display within their Under Water Viewing area. This tribute will allow staff and visitors to share their cherished memories of Ray. The Cornish Seal Sanctuary invites everyone who knew and loved Ray to visit and celebrate his life, keeping the legacy of their beloved seal alive in their hearts.
