Clemo Books Celebrates One Year on Newquay’s High Street
Late-Night Shopping and Free Party on Saturday 23rd December
Clemo Books, Newquay’s independent bookshop, is marking a milestone this December as it celebrates one year of trading on Bank Street. To commemorate the occasion, the bookshop will host a birthday party on Saturday 23rd December from 6pm until late, offering a unique late-night shopping experience with gifts for guests. The event is free to attend and requires no tickets.
A Community Success Story
Opened in November 2023, Clemo Books was brought to life through a successful Crowdfunder campaign, with the support of both the local community and seasonal visitors. Reflecting on the journey, owner Jaimie Poyner said: “It’s been a whirlwind 12 months, and I feel so grateful to be living my dream of running a bookshop in my hometown. The local community and seasonal visitors have been so supportive of the business and their help has really made a difference in our first year of trading.”
Jaimie acknowledged the challenges of opening a business in a seasonal town but credited the bookshop’s loyal customers for their role in its success. “Opening a business in this climate, especially in a seasonal town, was a risk however I think Clemo Books’ customers know the importance of shopping local and the benefits it brings,” Jaimie added.
Events That Bring People Together
Over the past year, Clemo Books has hosted a range of monthly author events, featuring notable names such as Booker Prize-nominated Wyl Menmuir, debut authors Jodie Matthews and Ian Russel-Hsieh, and children’s favourites Sarah Tagholm and Naomi and James Jones. The bookshop also runs a book club, which has grown into a key part of its community offerings, with regular monthly meet-ups.
Looking ahead, Clemo Books has an exciting line-up of Christmas events, including a yuletide storytelling session with Be Newquay Festival, late-night shopping on Friday 29th November, and a special event with the authors of 13 Cornish Ghost Stories on Thursday 19th December.
Support Your Local Bookshop This Christmas
As the festive season approaches, Jaimie is encouraging shoppers to consider the value of local businesses. “I urge people to support their local bookshops this Christmas shopping season if they can – unlike some of the online giants we like to have a chat with our customers, host free events that benefit our local communities and pay our taxes!” she said.
Clemo Books operates year-round at 33b Bank Street, Newquay, TR7 1DJ, hosting events, book clubs, and free storytelling sessions. For more information, visit www.clemobooks.co.uk or follow @clemobooks on Facebook and Instagram.
