As temperatures decrease and the talk of snow in Cornwall increases, Cornwall Council has launched an array of initiatives to ensure the well-being of its residents during the harsh winter months. Recognising the challenges posed by the cold weather, the council has activated its Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) and is collaborating with numerous local organisations to provide critical support.

The SWEP, a key component of the council’s winter strategy, is now active. This emergency response is designed to protect those most vulnerable, particularly individuals experiencing rough sleeping. With the goal of ensuring no one is left out in the cold, Cornwall Council is encouraging community members to play an active role. If residents are concerned about someone sleeping rough in these severe conditions, they are urged to visit the StreetLink website. Through StreetLink, referrals can be made, connecting individuals to safe and warm accommodation. This initiative not only provides immediate relief but also offers a pathway to longer-term support and housing solutions.

In addition to SWEP, Cornwall Council has taken a holistic approach to winter wellness. Recognising the diverse needs of its residents, the council has compiled a comprehensive ‘Winter Wellbeing Guide’. This guide, accessible here, is a treasure trove of information, offering support, advice, and contact details of organisations across Cornwall. These organisations play a crucial role in helping people stay warm and well during winter, offering services ranging from financial advice to mental health support.

This concerted effort by Cornwall Council and local organisations highlights a community united in ensuring the well-being of its members. It’s a testament to the council’s commitment to not just managing the challenges of winter but to fostering a supportive and caring community.

The council’s proactive approach and the community’s involvement are pivotal in making Cornwall a place where residents can feel safe and supported, regardless of the weather conditions. As the winter progresses, Cornwall Council continues to monitor the situation, ready to respond and adapt its strategies to meet the evolving needs of its residents.
