In a heart-stopping rescue on Thursday, 15th August, the Newquay Coastguard Search and Rescue Team, along with their colleagues from HM Coastguard Padstow, were called into action after a dog named Max plunged 70 feet off a cliff near Porthcothan.

The incident occurred at 19:45 hours when Max, who was on a lead, managed to escape from his owner and accidentally fell off the steep cliff. The fall left Max with significant injuries, prompting an immediate response from both coastguard teams.

Technical Rescue Operation

Upon arrival at the scene, the coastguard teams quickly assessed the situation and prepared for a technical rescue. Members from both the Newquay and Padstow teams were rigged and lowered down the cliff to reach the injured dog. Despite the challenging terrain and the height of the drop, the rescue operation was carried out with precision and care.

After reaching Max, the rescuers carefully secured him before successfully retrieving him back to the top of the cliff. From there, Max was transported for urgent veterinary care.

Coastguard’s Advice for Coastal Safety

The Newquay Coastguard Search and Rescue Team took the opportunity to remind the public of the importance of coastal safety. They advised anyone witnessing someone in difficulty along the coast to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

The team also wished Max a swift recovery from his injuries, highlighting the dedication and teamwork involved in the rescue.

This dramatic rescue serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of coastal areas and the importance of staying vigilant when near cliffs and other hazardous environments.
