Sprint for Seals: A Run to Build a Better Future for Resident Seals at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary

Published On: 21 March 2024Last Updated: 21 March 2024By

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary has announced the return of its annual ‘Sprint for Seals’ event, scheduled for Sunday, 19th May 2024.

This much-anticipated family fun run aims to rally support and raise vital funds for the Cornish Seal Sanctuary’s ambitious ‘Fund Our Future’ campaign. The project seeks to raise £1.3 million to replace and upgrade four of the existing seal pools, which have been a part of the sanctuary since 1975. The new facilities are set to include eco-friendly habitat enhancements, such as state-of-the-art filtration systems and undercover viewing areas, significantly improving the quality of life for the resident seals.

Event Details: A Scenic and Supportive Run

Participants are invited to take part in a hilly 3km run around the picturesque grounds of the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, offering a unique opportunity to engage with the cause actively while enjoying the natural beauty of Gweek. The route begins near the admissions building, with runners completing two laps around the sanctuary, ending where they started. For the first time in 2024, the event also welcomes remote participants through a Strava Club event, allowing supporters worldwide to join in the effort.

The entry fee for the event is set at £15 per runner. This includes free day entry into the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, a race goodie bag featuring a t-shirt and medal, and the satisfaction of contributing to a noble cause. Remote runners will also be part of the race through their participation in the designated Strava Club event, ensuring everyone can help, no matter their location.

Beyond the Run: Prizes and Fundraising

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary is encouraging participants to go beyond just running by setting up individual fundraisers on the ‘Sprint for Seals 2024’ JustGiving page. The initiative promises exciting prizes for fundraisers, including unique experiences at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary. For every £50 raised, participants will receive an entry into a raffle, thus incentivising higher fundraising goals.

The Impact of Your Support

The ‘Fund Our Future’ campaign outlines specific benefits that each fundraising milestone can provide for the Cornish Seal Sanctuary’s residents. Contributions will aid in the construction of new pools, installation of sunshades, development of a quarantine area for medical treatment, an underwater viewing area, and an advanced filtration system. These improvements are essential for providing the seals with a habitat that not only meets but doubles the recommended licensing standards for the care of marine mammals.

How to Get Involved

For those interested in supporting the Cornish Seal Sanctuary’s efforts to provide a better future for their seals, registering for the Sprint for Seals event is a significant first step. Interested parties can purchase tickets and find more information on the Cornish Seal Sanctuary’s website or by contacting jasmine.chater@sealifetrust.com for assistance in setting up a fundraiser or for any further inquiries.

This event is not just a run; it’s a stride towards a better and more sustainable future for marine life, offering a perfect blend of fitness, fun, and philanthropy.
