Sun-Smart and Safe: Cornwall’s NHS Reveals Top Summer Health Tips

Published On: 23 July 2024Last Updated: 23 July 2024By

As the school holidays kick off, NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly is rolling out its summer health campaign to ensure both visitors and locals stay safe and healthy while enjoying the region’s natural beauty.

Protect Your Skin from Sun Damage

Cornwall’s stunning coastline and sunny climate make it a prime spot for outdoor activities. However, this also means higher rates of skin cancer—almost three-quarters of the rate found in Australia. Dr Chris Reid, Cornwall’s Chief Medical Officer, knows this risk all too well. “I used to spend a lot of time at the beach and on the water windsurfing. Recently I had to have a skin cancer removed from my ear. Protect your skin and cover up. Prevention is by far the best option,” Chris advises.

To safeguard against harmful UV rays, remember to wear a hat and sunglasses, and apply high SPF sun cream with broad UVA and UVB protection. As the locals say, “cream on top”—just like with your scones.

Choose the Right Health Service

NHS Cornwall has released an informative video to help you navigate health services during the holidays. Filmed at popular landmarks, the video is a guide to finding the appropriate care, whether you’re a tourist or a resident.

For minor health issues, self-care is often the best route. Keeping a well-stocked first aid kit can save you a trip to the pharmacy or GP. Essentials include paracetamol, aspirin, antiseptic cream, antihistamines, aftersun lotion, and rehydration solutions.

Follow These 6 Steps for Health Help

  1. Local Pharmacies: Pharmacies can assist with allergies, insect bites, stings, and emergency contraception. Many also offer the Pharmacy First service, providing antibiotics for conditions like infected insect bites and UTIs. They can even supply most prescription medicines in an emergency when your GP is closed. Find your nearest open pharmacy online.
  2. GP Services: If you’re visiting Cornwall and need a GP, contact your home surgery. They can help via phone, video, or email, and send prescriptions to a nearby pharmacy for collection.
  3. Minor Injury Units: These units are ideal for treating broken bones and cuts that need stitches. Check live opening and waiting times online to find the quickest option.
  4. Urgent Care Advice: For urgent care advice, visit NHS 111 online or call 111 to be directed to the best service for your needs.
  5. Mental Health Support: Cornwall’s 24/7 mental health helpline is available at 0800 038 5300. For additional support services, visit the NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly website.
  6. Emergency Department: Reserved for life- or limb-threatening emergencies. In cases of chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke, loss of consciousness, or major blood loss, call 999 or head straight to the hospital.
