Top Coaching and Big Opportunities for Young Athletes

Launceston College, part of Athena Learning Trust, has opened 2026 applications for its Elite Sports Academies, offering young athletes across Cornwall and beyond a chance to develop their skills with professional-level coaching and unique sporting opportunities.

The academies aim to nurture talented students through a blend of expert training, high-quality physical education, and real-world experiences. Partnering with Cornish Pirates Rugby Team and Plymouth Argyle Football Club Coaches, the programme provides access to elite coaching, competitions, residential camps, and trips to professional matches and facilities.

Applications are now open for girls rugby, boys rugby, girls football, boys football, boys and girls cricket, and the individual athlete academy. The individual athlete academy supports sports such as athletics, tennis, and swimming, offering weekly strength and conditioning sessions, travel subsidies, and tailored mentoring.

A Pathway for Committed Student Athletes

Entry to the academies requires students to already play at club level in their chosen sport. This ensures participants have both the ability and passion to compete and grow at a high standard.

Principal Matthew Thompson said:

“We are thrilled to open applications for our Elite Sports Academies for 2026. These programmes are designed to give talented young athletes access to expert coaching, specialised training, and exciting opportunities to develop their skills both on and off the field.

“By partnering with professional teams like the Cornish Pirates and Plymouth Argyle, and offering support such as free transport for students from Bude and surrounding areas, we aim to make our academies as accessible and inspiring as possible. We look forward to welcoming a new cohort of ambitious, dedicated athletes who are ready to push themselves and reach their full potential.”

Free Transport Expands Access

To make the academies even more accessible, Launceston College has announced free school transport for students living in Bude and the surrounding area, alongside continuing free transport for those in Holsworthy and nearby communities.

Recognised for Quality Education

Launceston College holds a ‘Good’ Ofsted rating across all areas, including Quality of Education, Behaviour and Attitudes, Personal Development, Leadership and Management, and Sixth Form Provision.

Inspectors noted that pupils, including those with SEND, follow a broad and ambitious curriculum that builds logically on their knowledge. Sixth form students study qualifications well-matched to their aspirations, and pupils attending the specially resourced provision follow a curriculum that suits their needs and capabilities.

Applications for the 2026 Elite Sports Academies are now open.
