Launceston College Students Strike Gold in National Maths Challenge
Students from Launceston College, part of Athena Learning Trust, have excelled in the UK Maths Trust’s (UKMT) Senior Challenge this month. The competition, aimed at testing students’ problem-solving abilities through a 90-minute multiple-choice round, saw participants from the college secure top honours.
Gold for Finlay and Stamatis
Among the standout students were Finlay and Stamatis, who both achieved Gold certificates in the challenge. Their success has earned them a coveted spot in the Andrew Jobbings Senior Kangaroo competition, set to take place in November. This follow-up competition is highly competitive, with only a few thousand students qualifying each year.
Matthew Thompson, Principal at Launceston College, expressed his pride in the students’ achievements, saying, “I am so proud of all the students who took part in the UK Maths Trust’s Senior Challenge. They all did fantastically well, and we will all be cheering Finlay and Stamatis on at the next round in November.”
College Commitment to Maths
Thompson further emphasised the college’s commitment to promoting a love for mathematics: “At Launceston College, we want young people to see the beauty and fun in maths and encourage students to explore all the different aspects of the subject. We aim to develop an appreciation of maths by demonstrating its importance in the wider world.”
College Rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted
Launceston College continues to thrive academically, as evidenced by its latest Ofsted rating of ‘Good’ across multiple areas, including Quality of Education and Sixth Form provision. The inspectors noted that students, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), follow a well-structured and ambitious curriculum designed to build on prior knowledge.
Applications Now Open
For parents and guardians considering Launceston College for their children, applications for secondary school places are now open. The deadline to apply is 31st October. For more information on the college’s offerings, visit the Launceston College website.
