MP Ben Maguire paid a visit to Launceston Primary School to see how pupils are using technology as part of their learning.

The school, which is part of Athena Learning Trust, welcomed the North Cornwall MP for a day that highlighted new facilities, classroom activities and a virtual trip to Parliament.

Tour of new facilities and classrooms

Ben began the visit with a tour of the school’s new building, facilities and outdoor learning areas, led by principal Kate Eyre. He visited every class, where pupils were taking part in a range of activities including Christmas crafts, a photography lesson and a reading session of James and the Giant Peach.

Virtual visit to Parliament

One of the standout moments came when Ben joined year 4 pupils for a virtual trip to London and the Houses of Parliament using VR headsets. During the session, he tried a VR headset for the first time, taking part in the experience alongside the pupils.

The lesson also focused on British Values, with a discussion about democracy. Pupils are expected to visit the real Parliament when they reach year 6.

Questions from the school council

The visit ended with a meeting with the school council in the principal’s office. Pupils asked Ben questions about his role as an MP as well as his Christmas plans.

The tour also highlighted wellbeing spaces within the school, including the Den. This space is used by the school’s children’s champion and visiting specialists to support pupils’ emotional and educational development.

Focus on technology and global awareness

The day reflected Launceston Primary’s approach to combining science, technology and global awareness. Pupils are encouraged to explore the world around them, develop creativity and curiosity, and understand the impact they have on their environment and community.

The school has also invited the wider community to attend an open event on Saturday 10th January between 10am and 12pm for anyone who would like to tour the school, meet the staff and see the technology in use.

Kate Eyre said:
“It was fantastic to welcome Ben Maguire to Launceston Primary and show him our new building, outdoor areas, and the exciting ways pupils are learning. Joining a real-life MP on a virtual trip to London and the Houses of Parliament brought their learning to life, and it was wonderful to hear them sharing their ideas and questions with him.”
