Powerful lessons from history

Students from Launceston College, part of Athena Learning Trust, have returned from a powerful and emotional visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland. The one-day educational experience was part of the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Lessons from Auschwitz Project, designed to deepen understanding of the Holocaust and promote remembrance among young people.

The group began their journey with an early morning departure from Exeter, joining other students from across the South West on a specially chartered flight arranged by the Trust.

Walking through history

On arrival in Poland, the group visited Auschwitz I, the first Nazi concentration camp. A guided tour provided historical context on Jewish life before the Second World War and the horrors that followed. Later, the students travelled to Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest of the Nazi camps, infamous for its railway tracks and haunting expanse.

Walking through the remains of the barracks, the group confronted the harsh conditions faced by millions of victims. As dusk fell, a memorial ceremony took place, featuring poetry, survivor stories, and candle lighting, bringing together participants from several countries in a moment of silent reflection.

More than a day trip

The Lessons from Auschwitz programme includes preparation seminars before the visit and follow-up discussions afterwards. This ensures students have time and support to process what they’ve experienced and encourages them to share their learning with others.

Matthew Thompson, Principal at Launceston College, said:

“This visit was a profound opportunity for our students to witness the reality of the Holocaust firsthand. It offered a powerful reminder of the importance of tolerance, empathy, and education. I know this experience will stay with them for life and help shape their understanding of history and humanity.”

A school committed to wider learning

Launceston College, rated Good across all areas by Ofsted, remains committed to offering students enriching experiences beyond the classroom. According to inspectors:

“All pupils, including those with SEND, follow a broad and ambitious curriculum. They learn new knowledge in a logical order. Pupils build on what they already know. Students in the sixth-form study for qualifications that are well matched to their future aspirations. The work they complete is suitably demanding. Pupils attending the specially resourced provision follow a curriculum that meets their needs and capabilities.”

By engaging with impactful experiences like this, the college aims to develop thoughtful, informed, and compassionate individuals who understand the value of history and remembrance.
