Unveiling Cornwall’s Role in the Renewable Energy Transition

The fifth UK Mining Conference, held this month at Falmouth’s Princess Pavilion, has spotlighted Cornwall as a crucial player in the UK’s transition to renewable energy. Organised by ABMEC and spearheaded by Cornish Lithium, the event gathered over 370 delegates, from Cornwall to Canada, encompassing operational mines, mineral exploration companies, the mining supply chain, government officials, investors, financial analysts, academics, and students.

Bridging Heritage and Innovation

The conference addressed diverse questions ranging from the intersection of local history with modern mineral extraction to the rebranding of mining as a clean and green industry. Presentations underscored the region’s potential to supply essential metals and minerals for electric vehicles, power storage, and everyday electronics. Jeremy Wrathall, Founder, Interim Chairman, and CEO of Cornish Lithium, emphasised Cornwall’s virtually untouched geological deposits and their significance in Europe’s energy transition.

“Cornwall’s rich geological deposits are virtually untouched by modern exploration techniques and this is our moment to drive the energy transition in Europe,” Wrathall remarked.

Progress and Prospects

Companies such as Cornish Lithium, Cornish Metals, and Imerys British Lithium reported significant advancements, with plans for environmentally responsible commercial production by 2026/2027. These projects are set to create hundreds of high-skilled, well-paid jobs, promising transformative economic benefits for the region.

Cornish Tin also shared exciting new discoveries, reinforcing the vibrant prospects of Cornwall’s mining industry.

Tackling Industry Challenges

Key discussions at the conference included the importance of gaining a social licence to operate from local communities, promoting mining engineering as a rewarding career path, and bridging the future skills gap. The conference also highlighted the need for the mining sector to adopt a clean, green, and modern image to attract young talent.

Celebrating Achievements

The event concluded with a Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony, featuring an after-dinner show by Golden Tree Production’s artistic director Will Coleman. Prestigious awards were given to outstanextrasding contributors within the mining sector:

Exploration Discovery of the Year: Sally Norcross-Webb and Cornish Tin

Tautus Rising Star within the Mining Sector: Sean Cleveland from Cornish Lithium

Best Innovation in Mining: Craig Clement from Evove

Environmental, Social and Governance/Outstanding Community Outreach Project: Ben Clitherow from Cornish Metals

Lifetime Achievement in the Mining Industry: Clive Newall from Cornish Tin

Jeremy Wrathall concluded the event by thanking participants and organisers, highlighting the importance of responsible mineral extraction in the energy transition and the necessity to attract young minds to the industry.

Looking Ahead

The fifth UK Mining Conference, supported by numerous sponsors, has set a robust foundation for Cornwall to lead the renewable energy transition. With a clear path forward and a spotlight on the region, Cornwall is poised to play a significant role in achieving economic growth and delivering positive change through its rich mining heritage and innovative future.
