Imerys British Lithium Opens Doors for Public Consultation on Lithium Processing Plant
Imerys British Lithium (IBL), a collaboration between global mineral expert Imerys and the pioneering British Lithium, invites the public to a consultation session regarding its plans for an innovative lithium processing plant. This event, the first in a series for the year, is set to take place at Roche Victory Hall Social Club on Wednesday, 21 February, from 2 to 7 pm.
Following fruitful discussions with local businesses and councillors, IBL is extending an open invitation to anyone interested in learning more about the venture. Attendees will have the opportunity to view detailed plans, ask questions, and provide feedback directly to the team responsible for this ambitious project.
IBL emerged from a joint venture announced last summer, combining Imerys’ extensive experience in mineral applications across various industries with British Lithium’s revolutionary techniques in lithium extraction and production from Cornish granite. This partnership has already led to the establishment of a pilot plant near Roche, operational for the past two years and successfully producing high-quality lithium carbonate.
The proposed full-scale lithium processing plant represents a significant expansion, aiming to be the world’s first integrated lithium quarry and production facility located on a historical clay extraction site in Cornwall. IBL’s Chief Executive, Andrew Smith, emphasised the project’s commitment to sustainability, highlighting plans to minimise waste and transport by situating the operation close to customers and leveraging local renewable energy sources.
The development process, including planning, permitting, and construction, is expected to span four years, with a strong focus on local employment and supplier engagement. Over 300 staff are projected to be hired once the plant is fully operational.
IBL is also committed to conducting a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment to guide its development strategy, ensuring minimal environmental footprint. Notable initiatives include the preservation of Hensbarrow Beacon from development and the restoration of the derelict Grade II listed miner’s cottage at Hensbarrow Farm into a visitor centre.
With further public consultations scheduled across Cornwall, IBL is keen on integrating community feedback into its planning process. Residents of Bugle, Trewoon, Penwithick, St Austell, Treverbyn, St Dennis, St Stephen, and Fraddon can expect upcoming sessions in their areas, offering more opportunities to engage with the project.
