Cornish Lithium Plc, a leader in mineral exploration and development, has received significant national recognition for its Trelavour Hard Rock Project. The project, located at St Dennis, in the St Austell area of Cornwall, has been designated as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) by Angela Rayner MP, the Secretary of State for Housing Communities and Local Government. This decision marks a pivotal development in the UK’s approach to mineral extraction and its burgeoning battery sector.

Project of National Importance

The Trelavour Hard Rock Project is set to extract lithium, a critical component in the manufacturing of batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage systems. The Secretary of State decided that the project’s scale and its potential economic impact extend beyond local boundaries, warranting a streamlined planning process under the NSIP regime.

The designation as an NSIP underscores the project’s capacity to drive significant economic growth both locally and nationally. It also highlights the strategic importance of lithium as an industrial mineral essential for the UK’s green energy transition.

Economic and Strategic Benefits

Jeremy Wrathall, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Cornish Lithium, expressed his satisfaction with the government’s recognition. “We are delighted that the Secretary of State has directed that the Trelavour Hard Rock Project should be designated as a development of national significance,” he said. This designation not only secures a vital domestic supply of lithium but also supports the competitiveness of British automotive manufacturing and the broader shift towards renewable energy.

Reviving Cornwall’s Mining Heritage

With a history of mining that spans 4,000 years, Cornwall is poised to experience a modern-day renaissance in mineral extraction, thanks to projects like Trelavour. By utilising innovative and sustainable extraction methods, Cornish Lithium aims to catalyse significant economic growth and provide enduring benefits to local communities.

The project’s advancement also offers clarity and certainty in development timelines, ensuring that stakeholder engagement continues to be a priority for the company.

A Green Revolution Contributor

Cornish Lithium is at the forefront of the UK’s transition to renewable energy, emphasizing the importance of establishing a secure, domestic supply chain for lithium. This initiative is particularly crucial as the UK currently imports 100% of its lithium, making the nation vulnerable to global supply chain disruptions. The development of the Trelavour Hard Rock Project is a strategic move towards reducing reliance on carbon-intensive imports and achieving the UK’s Net Zero targets.
