Exciting New Chapter for Looe: Plans for Innovative Business and Learning Hub Unveiled!
A fresh wave of economic development could be hitting Looe as the Town Council has submitted a planning application for a new Business and Learning Hub at The Millpool, promising opportunities for local businesses and entrepreneurs.
The proposal, validated recently by Cornwall Council, aims to create a centre that will support local economic growth by offering resources for training, business start-ups, and more. This ambitious project was inspired by a proposal from the late Councillor Edwina in 2020, focusing on diversifying Looe’s economic landscape traditionally dominated by marine, retail, hospitality, and tourism sectors.
Research and Development
Over the past few years, Looe Town Council has collaborated with various research firms like Horscroft Research Solutions and PFA Research Ltd, funded by the Town Vitality Fund through Cornwall Council. These studies aimed to explore viable strategies to foster economic development and provide meaningful employment opportunities within the community.
The potential hub is envisioned to feature state-of-the-art facilities including training rooms, meeting and exhibition spaces, a café, and more, designed by Space Design Architecture. While the council is yet to finalise the necessity of this building, preliminary designs and essential surveys have been conducted to maintain momentum and utilise available government grants efficiently.
Strategic Planning Application Submission
The decision to proceed with a planning application at this stage has been driven by three main factors:
- Utilisation of Completed Surveys: Key surveys needed for planning, such as land stability and environmental impacts, have already been completed. Submitting the application now avoids the financial burden of re-conducting these time-sensitive surveys in the future.
- Community Engagement and Viability Testing: The application process will facilitate further interaction with residents and businesses, helping to assess the overall viability of the proposed hub.
- Preparation for Potential Funding: With public funding opportunities often announced at short notice, having a ‘shovel-ready’ project increases the chances of securing financial support promptly when it becomes available.
Have Your Say
Looe Town Council is keen to involve the community in every step of this proposal and is inviting public commentary. Interested parties can view the application details and submit their comments through Cornwall Council’s planning portal using the reference: PA24/01569.
Residents and local businesses are urged to share their views either through the planning portal or by contacting Looe Town Council directly at their email or postal address.
Looking Ahead
As Looe stands on the cusp of significant economic development, the outcome of this planning application could set the tone for the town’s future. The proposed Business and Learning Hub represents not just growth, but a commitment to nurturing the local community and economy through thoughtful innovation and inclusive opportunities.
