Exploring the Mysteries of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna with Tom Horton
In an engaging and informative event, the Looe Marine Conservation Group is set to host a talk titled “Occurrence and Migrations of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna off the UK,” presented by Tom Horton from Exeter University. This event, aimed at unravelling the mysteries surrounding the Atlantic bluefin tuna, an iconic species that has returned to the waters of the UK and Ireland, is scheduled for Tuesday, 20th February, from 18:15 to 20:15 at the RNLI in Looe.
Atlantic bluefin tuna, known for their significant size and speed, are apex predators that play a crucial role in marine ecosystems. Almost a decade ago, these majestic creatures made a notable return to the UK and Ireland’s waters, sparking interest and research into their behaviours, migratory patterns, and habitats. Since 2018, scientists, including Tom Horton, have embarked on a journey to uncover vital information about these fish. Key questions such as the specifics of their return, their preferred habitats, migratory routes, and the possibility of their return after departure are at the forefront of this research.
The talk promises to shed light on the findings of six years of dedicated research, providing attendees with the latest insights into the life of the Atlantic bluefin tuna. This event is not only an opportunity for marine biology enthusiasts and the general public to learn about these fascinating creatures but also a chance to engage with the ongoing conservation efforts and research conducted by the Looe Marine Conservation Group.
Following the talk, the group will hold its monthly in-person meeting, which is open to all. The event emphasises the importance of community involvement in marine conservation efforts, inviting individuals of all ages to partake. However, it is noted that attendees under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
The Looe Marine Conservation Group is hosting this event free of charge, though donations are welcome to support their ongoing conservation work. Interested parties are encouraged to visit the group’s website and Facebook page for the most current information regarding the event. For further inquiries, the organisation has provided an email address: looemcg.events@gmail.com.
This talk represents a unique opportunity to delve into the mysteries of the Atlantic bluefin tuna and to engage with the broader conversation about marine conservation and research in the UK.
