Looe Lifesaver Honoured: King Recognises 32 Years of Dedication

David Haines, a cornerstone of Looe’s RNLI operations for over three decades, has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) in His Majesty The King’s New Year Honours. Recognised for his unwavering commitment to saving lives at sea, David’s career with the RNLI spans 32 years, marked by leadership, resilience, and community engagement.

A Lifesaving Legacy

David’s journey with the RNLI began in 1992 when Looe Lifeboat Station reopened its doors. Starting as a crew member, he later became a helm before stepping into the critical role of Lifeboat Operations Manager. Over the years, his visionary leadership guided the station through challenging times, ensuring stability and future-proofing its operations.

Under David’s stewardship, Looe lifeboats launched 1,027 times, assisting 826 people and saving 65 lives. His citation for the BEM hails him as “a humble hero whose legacy transcends accolades,” reflecting the respect and admiration he has earned.

Turning Tragedy into Hope

David’s passion for lifesaving is deeply personal. After losing his 19-year-old brother John in a fishing accident in 1979, David dedicated his life to improving water safety. In 2009, he spearheaded an appeal to name a lifeboat in memory of Ollie Naismith, a 19-year-old who tragically lost his life. Today, two lifeboats bear Ollie’s name, serving as a tribute and a vital community resource.

David also championed collaboration between Looe’s lifeboat crews and RNLI lifeguards, ensuring joint training sessions maximised their lifesaving capabilities. His efforts extended to supporting the annual rescue board challenge, a gruelling fundraising event undertaken by lifeguards.

A Lifetime by the Sea

David’s life has revolved around the sea. A boat owner since the age of 15, he worked as a commercial fisherman, served as a Looe Harbour Commissioner, and remains a familiar face on East Looe quay, often found aboard his ferryboat Emma Louise.

His dedication inspired others, including family members, to join the RNLI and continue the legacy of service. In 2018, David received a Rotary Award for his vocational and voluntary contributions, followed by the RNLI’s 30-year Long Service Award in 2022.

Moving Forward

Although David retired from operational service on his 70th birthday in October, his involvement with the RNLI continues as Chair of the Lifeboat Management Group. Reflecting on his recognition, David said:

“I was so surprised when I received the letter saying that I was going to receive an honour, it took a while for the news to sink in. I feel incredibly proud, and humbled, to have been recognised in this way but I couldn’t have achieved anything without the support of the Looe RNLI family – from the operational crew to the many fundraising, shop and boathouse guide volunteers, and the local community who have supported Looe RNLI so well over the decades.

“On a personal note, I’m also very proud that my family have been influenced by my volunteering and have all been involved in the RNLI and maritime in one way or another. I’d like to thank everyone who has made my time with the RNLI so memorable, and for my family who have been so supportive.

“My 32 years as a volunteer has been immensely rewarding and I feel privileged to be part of such a fantastic organisation.”

RNLI Recognition

David is one of five RNLI volunteers recognised in this year’s honours, marking the end of the RNLI’s 200th anniversary. Chief Executive Peter Sparkes said:

“Our volunteers are the heart of our lifesaving service – we couldn’t do what we do without them. My congratulations to these five worthy recipients and my sincere thanks to the thousands of others who continue to volunteer their time as we embark on our third century of saving lives at sea.”

David’s remarkable dedication stands as an inspiration to his community and a testament to the RNLI’s lifesaving mission.
