Looe RNLI volunteers join the blessing of the sea service at Portwrinkle harbour
Looe RNLI’s D Class lifeboat Ollie Naismith II and its volunteer crew participated in the annual blessing of the sea service at Portwrinkle harbour on Sunday, 14th July 2024. The event, hosted by the congregation of St Mary’s Church, Sheviock, was particularly special this year as it marked the 200th birthday of the RNLI.
Celebrating the Lifeboat Crew
Helmed by Toby Bray, with crew members David Jackman and Will Jaycock, the lifeboat made a grand entrance, delighting the assembled congregation. The crew, accompanied by Press Officer Ian Foster and shore crew member Carol Foster, joined the outdoor service which was filled with song and dance, notably to the tune of “My Lighthouse.”
Ian Foster took a moment to thank the congregation for their warm welcome and shared a brief history of Looe Lifeboat Station. Originally opened in 1866, the station closed in 1930 but was re-established as an inshore lifeboat station in 1992. Foster highlighted the dedication of Toby and David, who have been volunteer crew members for over 30 years, and Will, representing the new generation of volunteers, earning a round of applause from those gathered.
Blessing of the Lifeboat
Following the service, attendees moved to the water’s edge where Reverend Joanna Northey blessed the D Class inshore lifeboat and its crew. The community spirit was palpable as some attendees paddled in the water during the blessing ceremony.
After the service, the crew and congregation enjoyed tea and cakes on the beach, fostering a sense of camaraderie and celebration.
A Meaningful Conclusion
As the event drew to a close, Toby Bray, David Jackman, and Will Jaycock prepared to depart Portwrinkle harbour. At the request of a local named Sue, they carried out a symbolic act of faith and community by taking a simple wooden cross out into the bay. Pausing just outside the harbour, David Jackman placed the cross on the water, completing the blessing of the sea service.
This annual tradition, enriched by the participation of the Looe RNLI volunteers and the commemoration of RNLI’s bicentennial, highlighted the enduring connection between the sea, the community, and those who dedicate their lives to safeguarding it.
