Mevagissey Coastguard Helps Rescue 30 Cows Trapped by Rising Tide

Published On: 2 August 2024Last Updated: 2 August 2024By

Yesterday, in the early hours of the morning, Mevagissey Coastguard played a crucial role in the rescue of thirty young cows stranded on rocks by a rapidly rising tide, 200 metres off Colona Beach. The operation, which also involved Fowey RNLI, ensured the safe return of the entire herd.

Stranded by the Tide

The cows became trapped as the tide rose, leaving them isolated on rocks and unable to return to shore. The emergency call was made at 01:03, prompting the Mevagissey Coastguard and Fowey RNLI to respond swiftly and provide safety cover for the rescue effort.

The Daring Rescue

The farmer used a small boat to ferry the cows back to shore, one at a time. Meanwhile, his wife took on a more daring approach, repeatedly swimming out to the rocks to guide the cows back. For ninety minutes, she swam tirelessly, bringing one or two cows back each time, even as the water rose to their necks.

A Safe Outcome

Thanks to the quick thinking and perseverance of the farmers, along with the support of Mevagissey Coastguard and RNLI, all thirty cows were successfully brought back to dry land. The rescue operation concluded without injury at around 04:00, marking a successful and heroic effort by all involved.
