Mevagissey Coastguard Urges Fishermen to Leave Lighthouse Quay Amid Dangerous Waves
Anglers Urged to Exercise Caution as High Tides and Rough Seas Pose Serious Risks
In an incident yesterday evening, the Mevagissey Coastguard was called to action at 7:07 PM following reports of fishermen in distress at Lighthouse Quay. The anglers, who were line fishing, found themselves battered by powerful waves in the midst of heavy rain and strong winds.
Coastguard Responds to Distress Call
Upon receiving the emergency call, the Coastguard team swiftly arrived on the scene. Despite the challenging weather conditions, they managed to stay relatively safe by positioning themselves on the sea wall. From there, they persuaded the fishermen to abandon their risky venture and head home. The incident occurred roughly two hours before high tide, a period when the tide’s rise and strong waves could have easily swept the fishermen off their feet and into the sea.
Reminder to Fish Safely
The Coastguard’s quick response serves as a timely reminder of the importance of fishing safely, especially during adverse weather conditions. Even in July, the combination of strong waves and rising tides presents a significant danger. The Coastguard emphasised the need for fishermen to be aware of the conditions and to prioritise their safety to ensure they return home to their loved ones.
Operation Concludes Successfully
After ensuring the fishermen were out of harm’s way, the Coastguard team concluded their operation, albeit rather wet from the rain and sea spray. They then returned to their base to hang up their drenched gear to dry before officially standing down for the evening.
This incident highlights the ever-present risks associated with fishing off coastal areas, particularly during high tide and bad weather. The Mevagissey Coastguard continues to urge all fishermen to heed safety warnings and to exercise caution to prevent such potentially dangerous situations.
