The Minack Theatre Trust CIO has joyfully announced the appointment of Rebecca Thomas as the new Director of the Minack Theatre, a revered cultural landmark nestled on the Cornish coast.

Rebecca is set to assume her new duties on 1 June 2024, succeeding Zoë Curnow, who bids farewell to the theatre after a dedicated service of 17 years.

A Cornish Native at the Helm

Born and raised in Cornwall, Rebecca’s educational journey took her to Exeter University, where she earned a BSc Hons degree in Mathematics with Accounting. She further honed her professional skills by qualifying as a Chartered Accountant with Deloitte in London and Newcastle, before embracing roles across various sectors, including retail, manufacturing, and services.

From Sports to Stage

Rebecca’s leadership tenure at the Cornish Pirates Rugby Club, where she has been the CEO and Finance Director since 2010, underscores her remarkable versatility and capacity for steering prominent organisations through periods of challenge and change. Her decision to step down from her current role at the end of the season marks the end of an era for the club but also the beginning of an exciting new chapter at the Minack Theatre.

Her extensive experience in business and finance, combined with a genuine passion for the arts, positions Rebecca uniquely for her new role at the Minack. Notably, her engagement with the arts isn’t just administrative; Rebecca has graced the very stage she is set to oversee, performing with the Redruth Amateur Operatic Society Trust and Haarts Productions.

A Vision for the Future

Charles Sinclair, Chair of the Minack Theatre Trust CIO, expressed his enthusiasm about Rebecca’s appointment, highlighting her impressive background in business, her love for theatre, and her intimate connection with Cornish culture. Rebecca herself expressed her deep-seated affection for the Minack Theatre, regarding her new position as a privilege and an opportunity to contribute to the legacy of one of Cornwall’s crown jewels.

As Rebecca prepares to take the reins, her blend of business acumen, leadership in professional sport, and a life-long commitment to the performing arts heralds a promising era for the Minack Theatre. Her vision for the future, rooted in her personal and professional journey, promises to sustain and enrich this iconic venue’s unique heritage and enduring appeal to both locals and visitors from around the globe.
