Annual RNLI Lifeboat Blessing Returns to Mousehole Harbour This Sunday
Lifeboats to Receive Annual Blessing at Mousehole Harbour
This Sunday 10th August at 6pm, the volunteer crews of Penlee RNLI Lifeboat Station will arrive at Mousehole harbour for their annual open-air blessing service. This year’s service starts earlier than usual and promises to be a moving occasion.
Both of Penlee’s lifeboats — the Severn Class Ivan Ellen and the B class Atlantic 85 Mollie and Ivor Dent — will take part, accompanied by their crews.
Adding to the atmosphere will be the powerful sound of the Mousehole Male Voice Choir, who will perform during the event. Formed in 1909, the choir is the second oldest male choir in Cornwall and now boasts more than 80 members. Their roots go back to a small group of men and boys learning carols in an old net loft in Mousehole, and they have since become known internationally.
Honouring the Crew of the Solomon Browne
A key part of the evening will be a moment of remembrance for the eight men who perished on the Solomon Browne during the tragic call out to the coaster Union Star on 19th December 1981.
Those who gave their lives were:
-
William Trevelyan Richards (Coxswain)
-
James Madron (Second Coxswain and Mechanic)
-
Nigel Brockman (Assistant Mechanic)
-
John Blewett (Emergency Mechanic)
-
Charles Greenhaugh (Crew Member)
-
Kevin Smith (Crew Member)
-
Barrie Torrie (Crew Member)
-
Gary Wallis (Crew Member)
Their names will be remembered during the blessing, offering a moment for the community and visitors to reflect on the sacrifice made in the service of others.
A Special Evening on Cornwall’s Coast
With a backdrop of lifeboats, choral music and remembrance, Sunday’s service promises to be a heartfelt moment of community reflection and pride.
Visitors are advised to arrive in good time for the 6pm start, especially with this year’s earlier timing.
