Cornwall’s Rewind Radio has celebrated a major milestone with the triumphant completion of its 2024 Radiothon, surpassing its original fundraising target by nearly double. Managing Director Richard Woods took to the airwaves for an impressive 48-hour broadcast marathon, raising almost £26,000 to support three vital local charities: HD Livin’, Cornwall Hospice Care, and Penhaligon’s Friends. Initially aiming for £15,000, the event’s success was powered by the generosity of local businesses and devoted listeners across Cornwall.

A Community United

The Radiothon, supported by key sponsors Andrew Davenport of Focus Technology in Redruth and Reuben Jenkins from Carers Break CIC, showcased the strength and unity within the Cornwall community. Over 40 items were auctioned off, accompanied by more than 20 items featured in an online raffle, drawing participation and heartfelt support from across the region. The event evoked a mix of emotions, with listeners experiencing everything from laughter and joy to reflection and motivation.

Richard’s marathon broadcast was streamed by Shane Solomon from Corker Media, amplifying the event’s reach and impact. The strong support network, including Richard’s family and the entire Cornwall’s Rewind Radio team, played a crucial role in the Radiothon’s achievement. Reflecting on the experience, Richard expressed: “One word can be used to describe this event – Overwhelming. I’ve been through every emotion, and days later, it still hasn’t sunk in. The support of my wife, children, and family, the entire team at Cornwall’s Rewind Radio, Shane Solomon from Corker Media who streamed the event, every business who sponsored the event or donated to the auction and raffle, and listeners who supported us is something I can never thank enough.”

The Inspiration Behind the Effort

Richard’s drive to complete the 48-hour challenge stemmed from a deeply personal experience. He shared: “When your friend prays for cancer as he awaits test results for Huntington’s – knowing deep down he already had the disease – you realise just how vital support is needed. Cornwall doesn’t yet have a centre for HD sufferers, and we’re raising funds to change that. We’re also thrilled to support Cornwall Hospice Care and Penhaligon’s Friends, who provide crucial resources for our community.”

Recognising Dedication

Jack Murley, Programme Controller for Cornwall’s Rewind Radio, commended Richard’s dedication, stating: “In all my years in radio, I couldn’t have delivered 48 hours with the same energy and passion Richard did. His drive is a testament to his commitment to helping others.”

How to Contribute

For those who wish to continue supporting the cause, the JustGiving link for donations remains open: JustGiving Radiothon 2024.

Cornwall’s Rewind Radio, known as the only independent commercial station in the region, continues to demonstrate its commitment to the community by championing local stories and causes from Plymouth to Penzance.
