Penrose National Trust Seeks Donations for Newly Crafted Second-hand Bookcase

Published On: 20 February 2024Last Updated: 20 February 2024By

Penrose National Trust has recently introduced a bespoke second-hand books area, an endeavour that not only enriches the visitor experience but also supports the ongoing conservation efforts of the estate’s walled garden. Located in a charming corner of the new indoor seating area by the café, this addition aims to cultivate a love for reading among the community while contributing to a noble cause.

The bookcases, a testament to local craftsmanship and sustainability, were handmade by volunteers using Monterey pine from the Penrose estate. This thoughtful choice of material reflects the National Trust’s commitment to environmental stewardship and the promotion of local resources.

Penrose National Trust is now calling for donations to stock the shelves of this newly established area. The collection currently features a variety of pre-loved fiction and non-fiction books, including children’s literature, cookery, gardening, and biographies, all generously donated by the staff, volunteers, and supporters of the Trust.

To continue growing this collection, the Trust is appealing to the public for donations of good quality paperbacks, with a special interest in fiction and children’s books. Recognising the limitations of storage capacity, the Trust encourages small donations—a carrier bag or less—to be dropped off directly at the café. For those wishing to donate in larger quantities, arrangements can be made by contacting the Penrose National Trust team directly at 01326 222170 or via email at penrose@nationaltrust.org.uk.

The initiative not only offers a new haven for book lovers but also aligns with the Trust’s mission to raise funds for the care and enhancement of the walled garden located behind the café. This garden is a vital part of the estate, providing a tranquil space for both nature and the community to thrive.

With the unveiling of the new second-hand books area, Penrose National Trust reinforces its dedication to community engagement, environmental conservation, and the joys of reading, inviting everyone to be a part of this commendable effort.
