Pentire Headland tops national list as Cornwall claims 5 of the UK’s 50 best floral trails for 2025

Five Cornish trails have been named among the UK’s highest-rated wildflower walks, according to new research from Flying Flowers, just as interest in floral footpaths soars.

Google searches for “wildflower walks” have jumped by 300% in the past year alone, with walking season at its peak between March and October. The new rankings aim to help walkers discover stunning routes with fewer crowds by analysing user reviews from AllTrails and Tripadvisor.

Cornwall stood out with five trails in the national top 50, including one walk that took the overall top spot.

1st Place Nationally: Pentire Headland Walk

Pentire Headland Walk near Polzeath has been rated the UK’s top wildflower trail, with 4.9 stars on AllTrails and a full 5 stars on Tripadvisor. The coastal trail is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and known for its fields of red poppies, yellow corn marigolds, and other botanical species including blue squill and thrift.

Also making the list was the Chapel Porth to St Agnes trail via the South West Coast Path, ranked 20th overall. The heathland along this walk bursts into yellow and purple with gorse and heather in bloom.

At number 30 is the Lizard Lighthouse to Kynance Cove route. With a mix of wild daisies, thrift, eastern gladiolus and sea fig, this walk combines vibrant floral sights with sweeping sea views.

The Bude and Upton Circular trail followed at 35th place. Walkers can expect a variety of wildflowers including kidney vetch, celandine and thrift, along with calm stretches of canal paths and dramatic cliffside scenery.

Completing the top five Cornish entries is the trail from Porthcurno to Land’s End (43rd place), where common ragwort, purple loosestrife, montbretia and yarrow add colour to the dramatic coastal landscape.

Sandra Varley, Head of Flying Flowers, said: “In the busier summer months, you probably won’t have a trail entirely to yourself, but choosing lesser-reviewed, highly-rated routes gives you a better chance of enjoying wildflower walks with fewer crowds.”

She added: “Wildflower enthusiasts will have the best experience visiting floral trails between April and August, as this tends to be the peak time for botanicals to bloom.”

Sandra also highlighted a tip for identifying plants while out walking: “iPhones have a great built in feature for identifying plants, all you have to do is take a picture and scroll up on the image to its details, and you’ll get an instant wildflower ID.”

And for those unable to get outdoors, Sandra noted: “You can get beautiful bouquets of flowers by post to brighten up your home instead.”
