Dramatic Rescue: RNLI Penlee Lifeboats Save Grounded Yacht in Penzance
At around 11:00 pm on 4th May 2024, two RNLI Penlee lifeboats were dispatched to rescue a 10-metre yacht that had grounded off Penzance.
The all-weather Severn Class Lifeboat Ivan Ellen and the B class Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat the Mollie and Ivor Dent were launched by Falmouth Coastguard. The yacht was operated single-handedly and ran into trouble due to the onshore east wind.
Initial Response
The Penlee inshore lifeboat, commanded by Helmsman James Roberts, arrived at the scene first. Despite shallow water and challenging conditions, the crew managed to secure a line to the yacht. The vessel, unable to re-float due to the wind, was pulled free of the rocks.
Complications Emerge
To assist the elderly skipper, an RNLI volunteer from the all-weather lifeboat boarded the yacht and informed Coxswain Patch Harvey that it was taking on water. The inshore lifeboat towed the yacht to Newlyn harbour, where the all-weather lifeboat rafted alongside it, towing it to a pontoon berth to transfer a salvage pump.
Damage Control
The yacht suffered hull damage while aground, and over the next two hours, it was pumped out every 20 minutes. As the tide rose, the yacht was towed to the north pier to dry out and assess the hull damage at low tide. Both lifeboats returned to station at 2 am on Sunday morning to wash down and refuel in preparation for future service.
Safety Advice from the RNLI
The RNLI recommends always wearing a lifejacket on deck and a harness when necessary. When using a dinghy or tender to access a boat, it’s crucial to wear a lifejacket. Carrying a means of calling for help, such as the SafeTrx app, can be vital. The app also allows users to plan voyages and alert the coastguard if they are overdue. Additionally, it’s important to check weather forecasts and tide times.
