Stranded Yacht Rescued off Newlyn by Penlee Lifeboat Crew

Penlee Lifeboat Station’s all-weather Severn Class Lifeboat, the Ivan Ellen, was launched just before 6pm on Thursday 9th October 2025 after a request from Falmouth Coastguard to assist a 36ft yacht that had suffered engine failure five miles southeast of Newlyn. Two people were onboard.

Calm Seas, No Power

The yacht’s skipper had managed to sail closer to Newlyn, but with little wind and no engine power, the vessel required help to reach safety.

Swift Response from Penlee Crew

Coxswain Patch Harvey launched quickly with a crew of six RNLI volunteers to reach the yacht. After assessing the situation, Patch decided the safest option was to tow the vessel to the nearest safe harbour at Newlyn.

Safe Arrival in Harbour

The Penlee Lifeboat towed the yacht close to the harbour entrance before setting up an alongside tow, allowing the yacht to be safely manoeuvred to a berth. Once the task was complete, the lifeboat was washed down and refuelled, ready for its next service.
