A Sunday Full of Rescues for Newquay’s Coastguard Team
Sunday, 11th August 2024, turned out to be an exceptionally busy day for the Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team as they tackled a series of emergencies along the town’s popular beaches. With five separate incidents requiring their attention throughout the afternoon and evening, the team demonstrated their readiness and commitment to keeping beachgoers safe.
Evacuating Crowds from Whipsiderry Beach
The action-packed day began at 3:25 PM when the coastguard team was called to assist RNLI Lifeguards in evacuating over 200 people from Whipsiderry Beach. As the tide came in rapidly, beachgoers were in danger of becoming trapped. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the coastguard team and full-time coastguard officer S11C, the crowd was safely escorted back to Porth Beach.
Rescuing Stranded Casualties
Not long after, at around 4:05 PM, the team faced another critical situation. The Newquay RNLI Lifeboats were deployed to assist in the rescue of a casualty and several others who had become stranded on Whipsiderry Beach. The lifeboats ensured the safe return of all involved, while also assisting those attempting to access Whipsiderry from Watergate Beach.
Injury at Lusty Glaze Beach
As the team continued to manage the evacuation on Porth Beach, they were called to yet another incident at Lusty Glaze Beach at approximately 5:15 PM. Responding swiftly, the team located and provided treatment to a casualty before referring them to the hospital for further care.
Ongoing Emergencies at Porth Beach
The busy day persisted as the coastguard team was dispatched again at around 6:10 PM, this time to assist a casualty at the water’s edge on Porth Beach. After providing first aid, the casualty was transported by the Boardmasters team for additional treatment at the festival site.
Final Call: Casualties in Towan Beach Cave
The last tasking of the day came in at 7:21 PM, following reports of casualties trapped in a cave on Towan Beach. The Newquay Inshore Lifeboat, St Agnes Coastguard Search & Rescue Team, and Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 924 were also dispatched to assist. Fortunately, all teams were stood down shortly after arrival when it was confirmed that the casualties were safe and unharmed.
A Demanding Day for Newquay’s Coastguard
Sunday proved to be a demanding day for the Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team, as they worked tirelessly to manage multiple emergencies and ensure the safety of those along the coast. Their quick response and efficient coordination played a crucial role in resolving potentially dangerous situations.
The coastguard continues to remind everyone to stay aware of the risks along the coast and to dial 999 if they spot someone in trouble.
