Birdwatching Event at Towan Head Records 18 Bird Species

Connect with Nature’s group has held a successful birdwatching event at Towan Head in Newquay, bringing together nature and wildlife enthusiasts for a morning of coastal observation.

The event was organised by Rowena Castillo-Nicholls, Founder and Chair of Connect with Nature, RSPB Kernow Group Leader, and Publicity Officer of Cornwall Birds. The fieldtrip was led by Rob Nicholls. Eleven people took part.

Wide Range of Birdlife Recorded

During the session, the group recorded 18 different bird species at Towan Head. These included:

  • 5 Carrion Crow

  • 2 Chough

  • 14 Cormorant

  • 100+ Gannet

  • 12 Great Black-backed Gull

  • 1 Great Northern Diver

  • 5 Guillemot

  • 80+ Herring Gull

  • 8 Jackdaw

  • 1 Kingfisher

  • 1 Magpie

  • 2 Meadow Pipit

  • 16 Oystercatcher

  • 9 Purple Sandpiper

  • 3 Rock Pipit

  • 3 Shag

  • 2 Stonechat

  • 38 Turnstone

The variety and numbers seen made the outing an enjoyable one for those attending.

A Relaxed End to the Day

The birdwatching session ended with tea, coffee, biscuits, and cake, brought along by Rowena, giving attendees a chance to chat and reflect on the sightings before heading home.
