Crafts, Cuisine, and Community: The Heart of Newquay’s New Monthly Market
Newquay is set to enliven its streets with the introduction of a new monthly street market, starting this April.
The announcement follows a series of successful trial markets in 2023, which garnered strong support from both local residents and businesses. The initiative is a collaborative effort between Newquay BID, LOVE Newquay, Cornwall Shop Small, and Newquay Farmers Market, with backing from Newquay Town Council.
A Boost for Local Economy and Creativity
Scheduled for the first Saturday of each month, the BIG Newquay Market aims to be more than just a shopping destination. On April 6th, from 10 AM to 4 PM, visitors will find Bank Street and the Killacourt seafront transformed. The market will feature around 50 stalls offering everything from contemporary crafts and artisan makes to local lifestyle inspiration, vintage finds, and gourmet food and drink. Live music, community activities, and special offers from local businesses will enhance the festive atmosphere.
Mark Warren, the Newquay BID Manager, shared insights into the market’s potential impact. According to Mark, footfall data from a trial market in September 2023 showed a significant increase, signalling strong community interest and potential economic benefits. Research indicates that markets can amplify local spending, with £1 spent at a market generating £1.75 for local businesses.
Encouraging Local Participation
Mark also highlighted the market’s open, gazebo-style layout, designed to complement rather than compete with existing local businesses. He encouraged business owners to engage with the event through special offers or outdoor displays, promising promotional support to maximise visibility.
In partnership with Cornwall Council’s Experience Newquay project, efforts are underway to extend the market program into the autumn and winter months. This aims to sustain high street footfall year-round. A recent survey underscored the local community’s enthusiasm for markets, ranking them as a top priority for event attendance.
Showcasing Cornish Creativity and Produce
Sarah Curley of Cornwall Shop Small expressed excitement about continuing to promote local talent and sustainability. The market will highlight the work of Cornish artists, designers, and craftspeople, offering a unique shopping experience that emphasises local craftsmanship and sustainability.
Newquay Farmers Market, a staple in the town for several years, will contribute a diverse array of local food and produce. Caroline, representing the Farmers Market, looked forward to showcasing a curated selection of foodie traders, adding a vibrant and fresh dimension to the market offerings.
Community and Business Endorsements
Local artist Lu and Aimee Dabrowski, owner of Johnny’s Tobacconist, a family business since the 1970s, shared their positive experiences and anticipation for the market’s regular return. Their testimonials reflect a broader community’s excitement about the market’s capacity to invigorate Newquay’s creative scene and high street.
