In a daring late afternoon rescue, two individuals were winched to safety from the steep cliffs between Tolcarne and Lusty Glaze Beach, thanks to the swift action of multiple rescue agencies.

A Close Call

As the clock struck 17:48 on Friday, April 12th, 2024, emergency services were alerted to a perilous situation unfolding along the coastline of Newquay. The Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team, together with Newquay RNLI Lifeboats and Towan RNLI Lifeguards, were dispatched following reports of two people trapped by the quickly encroaching tide.

Multi-Agency Response

The operation saw a coordinated effort from various teams. Towan RNLI Lifeguards employed a Personal Watercraft (PWC), while HM Coastguard Padstow and the SAR Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 924 were also crucial in the operation. The helicopter, known as R924, played a pivotal role by winching the individuals from the base of the cliff.

Safe Landing

Once safely extracted, the casualties were landed on the Barrowfields, a nearby open space, where they were met by waiting rescue teams. Despite being cold and wet from their ordeal, the pair did not require medical treatment and were subsequently transported back to their accommodation.

Lessons and Warnings

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by the sea, particularly concerning the swift nature of tides which can easily trap the unwary. The Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team has issued a reminder urging the public to always be cautious around coastal areas and to dial 999 and ask for the coastguard if they see anyone in difficulty.

Commendations All Round

The successful outcome of this rescue is a testament to the effective cooperation between multiple agencies. The community and the rescue teams have expressed their gratitude for the professionalism and quick response of all involved, highlighting the community’s reliance on such skilled teams and the critical nature of their service.

“Stay safe,” advises the Coastguard, a message underscored by the day’s events and the rapid response of their teams.

This incident not only underscores the unpredictability of coastal waters but also showcases the preparedness and valiant efforts of our emergency services in ensuring public safety. Stay tuned and always be aware of your surroundings when enjoying the beautiful but sometimes treacherous Cornish coast.
