Hybrid Fitness Craze Explodes as WAX Warrior Draws Record Numbers in Cornwall

Published On: 2 May 2025Last Updated: 2 May 2025By

Cornwall’s hybrid fitness scene hit new heights last weekend as more than 170 athletes came together for the record-breaking fourth WAX Warrior event.

Held at WAX Gym on April 26th, the event drew the largest crowd to date, cementing its place as one of the county’s standout fitness competitions.

A Challenge for All Ages

Inspired by the popular HYROX race format, WAX Warrior was co-created by local fitness enthusiasts Josh Mares and Luke Watson-Read. Their aim was to deliver a demanding yet inclusive course featuring functional strength exercises and endurance running.

Competitors aged between 8 and 68 took on the challenge, making this year’s event the most diverse yet. Athletes from a wide range of backgrounds came together, creating a lively and supportive atmosphere.

“Having competed in several HYROX races ourselves, Luke and I saw the potential for this style of hybrid fitness right here in Cornwall,” said Josh Mares. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see gyms across the county now incorporating WAX Warrior training into their routines.”

Local Support Lifts the Event

The day’s success was further boosted by strong local backing. Sponsors stepped up, including HYBRYD, which contributed prizes for top performers. Meanwhile, Mike Martin Window Systems donated two Garmin Smart Watches, awarded to those showing exceptional effort on the day. Congratulations were extended to Sean Walker and Jamie Baldwin for their grit and determination.

Nick from Mike Martin Window Systems, who is also a WAX Gym member, shared his thoughts: “As a member of WAX Gym myself, I’ve seen firsthand how hard people are training for this event. We’re proud to support another local business. The WAX Warrior is a fantastic community event and Luke and I look forward to seeing all of the competitors on the day!”

What’s Next for WAX Warrior?

With its unique mix of tough competition and community spirit, WAX Warrior is fast becoming a staple in the Cornish fitness calendar. Organisers have already confirmed that the next event will take place on July 19th, with registration now open.
