Lappa Valley Railway Goes Green: Train Turns Electric!
Nestled in St Newlyn East near Newquay in Cornwall, the cherished Lappa Valley tourist attraction is marking a significant shift in its operation by adopting electric technology for its iconic train rides, thus enhancing the visitor experience while significantly reducing its environmental impact.
From Diesel to Battery Power
Victoria, the principal locomotive of the smallest 7¼ inch gauge railway at Lappa Valley, has recently undergone a transformation from diesel to battery operation. This conversion not only promises increased efficiency but also a quieter journey, allowing over 100,000 annual visitors to fully enjoy the serene sounds of the idyllic Cornish landscape.
The conversion process, which took place over the winter months, was meticulously carried out by The Lynch Motor Company in Honiton. Victoria, initially powered by a Kippor Diesel generator, now operates entirely on a battery system capable of pulling a five-coach train for two full days on a single charge.
Impressive Efficiencies
According to Ben, the Operations Manager at Lappa Valley, the new system has brought about remarkable efficiencies. “Victoria can now cover up to 400 laps of the Lakeside Railway on a single charge,” he noted, adding that the former diesel locomotives required refuelling twice a day, consuming approximately 30 litres of petrol. The switch not only cuts down fuel costs but also reduces the attraction’s carbon footprint.
Celebrating a Milestone with Sustainability
As Lappa Valley gears up to celebrate its 50th anniversary this June, Victoria’s conversion to electric power underscores the attraction’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. Ben expressed satisfaction with the locomotive’s performance and the positive feedback from passengers who appreciate the quieter rides.
A Hub of History and Innovation
Located on the historic grounds of the former East Wheal Rose Mine and tracing the old Newquay to Chacewater branch line, Lappa Valley has not only preserved but also innovated upon its rich heritage. The site, which has been recognised with multiple awards including gold at the Cornwall Tourism Awards, continues to offer unlimited rides on its three railways, blending playful discovery with ecological responsibility.
Looking Ahead
As Lappa Valley continues to enchant visitors with its unique blend of play and train experiences, the adoption of electric technology in its operations is a promising step towards a more sustainable future, ensuring that this historic site can be enjoyed by generations to come without compromising the beauty of its natural setting.
