Newquay Café Starts a Blooming Marvellous Sunflower Competition

The Garden Café, nestled in the scenic Trenance Gardens of Newquay, has launched a bright and cheerful sunflower growing contest titled ‘Reach for The Sun’ this spring, complete with free seeds for café-goers.

This colourful competition invites locals to show off their gardening prowess and potentially win a delightful treat at the café.

Free Seeds with Every Purchase

Starting Wednesday, 10th April 2024, The Garden Café will be giving away sunflower seeds to each customer who makes a purchase. This endeavour aims to sprinkle some sunshine into the lives of Newquay residents during a spring season that’s been shy of sunshine so far. Karen, the owner of The Garden Café, expressed her enthusiasm about the competition. “We’re excited to see our community come together and showcase their green-fingered talents,” she said.

How to Participate

The café encourages participants of all gardening levels to take part in this fun competition. To enter, simply pick up your complimentary seeds at the café during open hours and plant them in a small pot or even a repurposed coffee cup. Initially, the seeds should be grown on a windowsill before being moved outside towards the end of May when they are robust enough.

Prizes Await the Tallest and Brightest

As the sunflowers reach towards the sky, participants are encouraged to snap photos of their blossoms and post them on social media. The Garden Café will be rewarding the grower of the most impressive sunflower with a special treat to enjoy at their establishment. The winner will be announced in mid-summer, giving everyone plenty of time to tend to their blooms.

Sunflowers not only beautify our surroundings but also play a crucial role in the ecosystem by supporting the bee population. These vibrant flowers are recognised by the RHS’s Plants for Pollinators campaign which The Garden Café proudly supports. “Sunflowers symbolise vitality and positivity, which is something we could all use a little more of right now,” Karen added.
