Newquay Lifeguards in Action: Over 100 Rescues and Three Lives Saved in a Single Weekend

Published On: 12 August 2024Last Updated: 12 August 2024By

RNLI lifeguards in Newquay faced a demanding weekend as challenging sea conditions led to more than 100 rescues across the area, with three lives saved. The busy beaches saw lifeguards working tirelessly to ensure the safety of visitors, as rough waters posed a significant threat to beachgoers.

Watergate Bay: The Epicentre of Rescue Operations

Watergate Bay was the most active spot, with lifeguards performing over 50 rescues throughout the weekend. On Friday alone, three lives were saved after being swept out to sea by the rough conditions. The swift actions of the RNLI team were crucial in bringing these individuals to safety, highlighting the importance of having lifeguards on duty.

Multiple Incidents at Porth and Fistral Beaches

Elsewhere, RNLI lifeguards at Porth Beach and Fistral Beach were called into action nearly 50 times. Among the incidents attended to, two major first aid emergencies required immediate attention, further adding to the weekend’s intensity.

Praise for Lifeguards’ Efforts

Lead Lifeguard Supervisor for Newquay, Lewis Timson, commended his team for their dedication and hard work. Lewis said, ‘The weekend saw lots of lifeguard activity in the area, and I’d like to thank all our team for their hard work, ensuring that people visiting the coast were kept safe.’ He emphasised that the lifeguards’ training plays a critical role in providing a first-class lifesaving service and extended his gratitude to the search and rescue colleagues who worked alongside the RNLI.

Safety Measures for Beachgoers

RNLI lifeguards are on patrol daily from 10am to 6pm, and the organisation strongly advises beachgoers to visit lifeguarded beaches during these hours. To stay safe, swimmers and bodyboarders should stay within the red and yellow flags. In the event of getting into trouble in the water, the RNLI recommends following the “Float to Live” advice: tilt your head back, relax, and breathe normally while gently moving your hands to stay afloat. Once stabilised, call for help or swim to safety.

The efforts of the RNLI lifeguards in Newquay over the weekend are a testament to their skill, training, and commitment to keeping the public safe in challenging conditions.
