Newquay Marine Group Hosts Seaquest Southwest Event at Towan Headland on Sunday

Newquay Marine Group has announced its next Seaquest Southwest event, scheduled for this Sunday on Towan Headland. Participants are invited to join at 11am for a unique opportunity to observe and record the diverse marine and coastal wildlife that Cornwall has to offer. The event promises an educational experience, with binoculars provided for attendees to enhance their wildlife spotting.

Seaquest Southwest, a citizen science marine recording project operated by Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Living Seas Team, has been instrumental in advancing knowledge and conservation of marine wildlife in Cornwall. For over a decade, Seaquest Southwest has utilised public events, surveys, and various activities to not only engage with volunteers and the public but also to gather essential data on marine wildlife. This data collection effort focuses on the abundance and distribution of marine megafauna along the Cornish coast, offering invaluable insights into the local cetacean population.

The project aims to accomplish three main objectives: engaging people with the marine environment, collecting data on marine wildlife, and fostering a deeper understanding and conservation of marine biodiversity. Through its dynamic programme of events, including public seawatches, Seaquest Sunday surveys, and an annual recorders conference, Seaquest Southwest has made significant strides in bringing people closer to the marine world.

Attendees of this Sunday’s event can look forward to becoming part of a decade-long tradition of citizen science in Cornwall. Newquay Marine Group also advises that in case of adverse weather conditions, updates will be provided, ensuring that the event runs smoothly for all involved. This gathering is not just an opportunity to witness the beauty of Cornwall’s marine life but also a chance to contribute to its preservation for future generations.
