Newquay RNLI Lifeboat Volunteers Accompanied Home By A Pod Of Dolphins

In the early hours of Sunday, 1st September, Newquay RNLI lifeboat volunteers were called to action following concerns for four individuals believed to have entered the water at South Fistral Beach. The search, which began after a call to Falmouth Coastguard, involved both the lifeboat crew and Newquay’s coastguard search and rescue team.

Late Night Search for Missing Persons

The call came through at 1.52am, prompting the crew of Newquay’s D Class lifeboat to launch a thorough search of the shoreline. Equipped with parachute flares, searchlights, and night vision monoculars, the lifeboat crew scanned the water while the Newquay coastguard team scoured the beach.

Despite an extensive operation, no evidence of the missing persons was found. After several hours, the Coastguard decided to call off the search at 6.41am, concluding the incident was a false alarm.

A Dolphin Display on the Way Home

On their return journey to the lifeboat station, the volunteers were treated to an unexpected spectacle. A pod of dolphins, known to frequent Newquay Bay, accompanied the crew, providing a much-needed moment of joy after the long night.

Fortunately, the crew managed to capture part of the dolphin display on their helmet cam, offering a rare glimpse of these playful creatures in their natural habitat.

Despite the false alarm, the dedication of the Newquay lifeboat crew serves as a reminder of the vital role they play in keeping Cornwall’s waters safe.
