Newquay RNLI lifeboat crews were called out in the early hours of Wednesday morning, 4th June, to help locate and assist a casualty needing medical attention on the coast between Tolcarne and Lusty Glaze.

Call-out in the middle of the night

The lifeboat volunteers were paged by Falmouth Coastguard at 12.32am, with an immediate launch request for both of Newquay’s lifeboats. The D class lifeboat launched at 12.41am, followed by the Atlantic 85 at 12.45am.

While the Atlantic 85 crew carried out a shoreline search along the beaches, the D class crew spotted a light from the casualty’s mobile phone in a small cove. They managed to reach the casualty and assess their condition before passing the location to the Newquay Coastguard Search & Rescue team.

Multi-agency effort

The coastguard team began preparing a rope rescue. A paramedic descended the cliff to reach the casualty, and the D class helm requested support from the Coastguard 924 helicopter. Once on scene, a second paramedic was winched onto the beach to help stabilise the casualty.

The casualty was then airlifted to hospital, with both lifeboats staying in the bay on standby until everyone was confirmed safe.

Crews returned just before dawn

The lifeboat crews were stood down at 3.05am and returned to the station for a short break, while the volunteer shore crew refuelled and cleaned both lifeboats ready for the next call-out. After the mandatory debrief, the team left the station around 4am.

Newquay RNLI described it as “another great example of a multi-agency rescue, working together in the early hours of the morning, showing the passion and drive of all volunteers involved.”
