Newquay Set for Active Travel Changes: Find Out How It Could Impact You
Cormac is hosting an event at the Griffin Hotel in Newquay to engage with local businesses and residents about the ongoing Mid Cornwall Metro Active Travel project. The event will take place on Thursday, 24th October, from 10.30am to 6.30pm. During the session, attendees will be updated on the latest developments, including changes to the project design based on feedback from the public consultation earlier this year.
The event will also feature the most recent engineering drawings, along with details about the project’s timeline, how it will affect the area, and what changes the community can expect to see. More information about the event and the project can be found here.
Why the Changes Are Needed
As part of the Mid Cornwall Metro rail service improvements, the Newquay area is preparing for increased footfall to and from the town’s train station. These changes aim to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety while enhancing the attractiveness of the area. The improvements will not only benefit those using the station but are also aligned with the Newquay Town Centre Development Framework, which highlights the importance of upgrading the public realm around Cliff Road and the station quarter.
The improvements will contribute to Newquay’s retail, leisure, cultural, and residential development, positioning the town as a key destination for residents and visitors alike.
What is the Mid Cornwall Metro?
The Mid Cornwall Metro is a £56.8 million rail improvement scheme, largely funded through the Government’s Levelling Up Fund. One of its key features is the re-introduction of a second platform at Newquay Train Station and the addition of a new passing loop at Tregoss Moor. These updates will allow for more frequent train services between Falmouth and Newquay and will increase annual capacity by 700,000 seats between Newquay and Par.
The project is focused on enhancing accessibility to the station through sustainable travel methods, such as walking and cycling. The improvements will also increase accessibility for wheelchair users and those travelling by bus.
Public Engagement and Feedback
Earlier this year, between 8th February and 17th March, the public was invited to provide feedback on draft plans for the project. These plans focused on improving streetscape and public areas to ensure better access to the train station and surrounding areas. Feedback from the public consultation has been analysed and incorporated into the current project design.
The next stage of the project will undergo formal consultation later this year. For further information on the Mid Cornwall Metro, you can visit the Lets Talk Cornwall Website..
