Newquay Set to Become UK’s First ‘Safe Space Town’ with New Initiative

Published On: 1 February 2024Last Updated: 1 February 2024By

In a pioneering move, Newquay is set to become the first town in the UK to adopt a comprehensive ‘Safe Space’ approach, providing refuge for individuals feeling vulnerable or at risk. Spearheaded by the Newquay Business Improvement District (BID), this groundbreaking initiative is supported by the Newquay Town Council, local businesses, the Town Mayor, and Devon and Cornwall Police.

Mark Warren, a spokesperson for the initiative, highlighted Newquay’s progression towards becoming a more welcoming and safe community. The town has already established a robust communication system linking CCTV and businesses. The new Safe Spaces scheme will add an extra layer of safety, making Newquay the UK’s first Safe Space Town. The initiative is expected to receive a positive reception from both locals and visitors.

In recent years, Newquay has seen a significant decrease in crime rates. This initiative represents a proactive step in further enhancing personal safety, focusing on both the nighttime economy and daytime activities. The scheme’s emphasis on creating safe spaces throughout the town is a testament to Newquay’s commitment to public safety.

Inspector Guy Blackford of Devon and Cornwall Police expressed strong support for the initiative. The police see it as an effective tool for protecting vulnerable people and a valuable addition to their ongoing efforts to enhance safety in Newquay. The initiative aligns with the police’s key priorities, including combating violence against women and girls.

Newquay BID is calling on local businesses and organisations to join the initiative, which includes funding support for necessary training. Businesses and organisations participating in the program will receive comprehensive preparation and support to become a recognised Safe Space. This includes understanding how to assist individuals seeking help and providing immediate support, such as calling for a ride home or contacting emergency services if needed.

Training for the initiative is scheduled to begin on February 20, 2024. Interested parties are encouraged to contact Rachel Jones at rachel.jones@clearsupport.net for more information and to register for training sessions.

This initiative aligns with Newquay’s ambition to prioritise personal safety. By establishing a network of designated Safe Spaces and providing specialised training in safeguarding and bystander intervention, Newquay aims to offer immediate and effective support to anyone at risk, whether it’s a young person unable to get home safely or someone feeling threatened.

For further comments or imagery requests, Newquay BID can be contacted at info@newquaybid.co.uk. The community’s commitment to safety and well-being is poised to set a precedent for towns across the UK.
