Newquay Teen Surfer Aims for World Stage in Peru
A talented young surfer from Newquay is appealing for community support to help him represent Team England at the ISA Junior Surf Championships in Peru this December.
Balancing Carpentry and Competition
Eighteen-year-old Reen Bowden-Inoue, a Level 2 Carpentry apprentice at Cornwall College Camborne, has been selected for the England Junior Surf Team. He is now fundraising to cover the costs of flights, accommodation and equipment transport to South America.
“It’s my last year on the under-18 England team so I’m just trying to surf as much as I can, train hard and see where it can take me afterwards,” said Reen.
“Next I’m going to a competition in Peru, the ISA World Games. It’s the biggest competition I’ve competed in so far so I’m super excited to go there.”
Training, Work and Determination
Reen, who earned second place at this summer’s Boardmasters Surf Competition, has spent years balancing his studies and apprenticeship with a demanding training schedule. Working full time as a carpenter while fitting in gym sessions and hours in the surf, his commitment is driven by a determination to keep improving and build a future that combines his passions for craftsmanship and the ocean.
“It’s inspiring to see a student like Reen putting so much into both his trade and his sport,” said a spokesperson for Cornwall College Camborne. “His dedication, discipline and focus show exactly what’s possible when you follow your passion and put in the work.”
Fundraising for the Trip
After the Peru event, Reen hopes to continue competing on the men’s circuit, earning ranking points that could one day lead to selection for Team GB and a potential Olympic future.
