Newquay’s Great Western to Undergo Major Refurbishment in 2026

The Great Western in Newquay is set to undergo a major refurbishment, with work beginning this month.

Perched above Great Western Beach, the clifftop pub with hotel-style accommodation has been part of the town’s story for almost 150 years. Owner St Austell Brewery is planning the transformation in 2026, with the aim of enhancing the experience for both visitors and the local community.

First Phase Gets Underway

The refurbishment will be delivered in three phases. The first will focus on the Trenarren Wing, which spans 26 bedrooms across three floors. Sixteen of these rooms have sea views.

Work on this phase is due to start in January 2026, with completion expected in late summer.

Guests can expect a refreshed interior inspired by the building’s coastal setting, featuring neutral sandy tones, deep blues and modern Art Deco touches that reflect the pub’s heritage.

More Changes Planned Over Two Years

Later phases, expected to be completed over the next two years, will include further bedroom upgrades along with improvements to the bar and communal areas. Once complete, the Great Western is intended to appeal both as a place to stay and as a social space for the community.

This is the fifth major refurbishment carried out by St Austell Brewery across its 45-strong managed estate in the past two years.

What the Brewery Says

Andrew Turner, Chief Operating Officer at St Austell Brewery, said:
“The refurbishment of the Great Western is all about creating a warm, welcoming space that honours the pub’s incredible history, allowing us to deliver memorable experiences for our guests.

“We know this building is an iconic part of Newquay’s heritage, which is why have committed to sensitively restoring it whilst improving its bedrooms and communal spaces for guests of all generations – both from here in the South West and further afield. We’re looking forward to starting work on the Great Western’s transformation later this month.”

Community Events to Continue

Managers Emily and Anthony Proffitt will continue to lead the team throughout the works. Community events including the Veteran’s evening, Newquay Museum meet up, chess group and Newquay Social are all set to continue during the refurbishment.

A Building Steeped in History

First opened in 1879, the Great Western was designed by Cornish architect Silvanus Trevail and is Newquay’s oldest purpose-built hotel.

Over the years it has welcomed visitors ranging from holidaymakers to royalty, including the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, who stayed there in 1926.

Today, the Great Western offers 66 bedrooms, a sun terrace and a restaurant overlooking the beach, making it a popular choice for surfers, cyclists, families and business travellers alike.
