Over 50 Volunteers Tackle Beach Litter in Newquay, Collecting 35kg of Waste

In an inspiring display of community spirit, over 50 volunteers, including residents and employees from various organisations, converged on Crantock Beach near Newquay to take part in a significant beach cleaning event.

Organised by Punch Pubs & Co, Cornish brewery Sharp’s, and Biffa, the UK’s leader in sustainable waste management, this event aimed to tackle the persistent problem of marine litter on one of Cornwall’s most beautiful beaches.

Substantial Waste Collection

Throughout the day, volunteers managed to collect an impressive total of 35kg of litter. The waste collected included a variety of recyclable materials such as plastic bottles, glass bottles, metal cans, and paper. These recyclables were sent off to be reprocessed and turned into new products, reinforcing the cycle of the circular economy. Meanwhile, non-recyclable materials were not wasted either; they were transported to an energy-from-waste facility where they will be converted into electricity, further underlining the sustainability goals of the event.

Pride in Local Action

Liam, Corporate Account Manager at Biffa, expressed his satisfaction with the day’s outcomes. “We take great pride in supporting local sustainability projects and we’re thrilled to have worked alongside Punch in the Crantock Community Beach Clean,” he stated. The collaborative effort not only focused on cleaning the beach but also aimed at reducing carbon emissions and preserving the natural beauty of the coastline through effective recycling practices.

Future Plans and Commitments

The success of the beach clean-up has spurred Punch to consider expanding these environmental protection efforts to other parts of the UK. Future clean-ups could include beaches, woodlands, and rivers across the country. Clive, Chief Executive Officer at Punch Pubs & Co, praised the dedication and effort of the participants. “I’m incredibly proud of what the team has achieved and want to say a huge thank you to all of the people who took part,” he remarked.

He also highlighted the broader implications of such community actions, noting that “Sustainability has become an area of increasing focus at Punch and reflects our position as a modern, progressive pub company.”

As marine litter continues to pose a significant threat to wildlife and ecosystems, the efforts at Crantock Beach represent a beacon of community and corporate responsibility aiming to foster a greater public awareness of the environmental challenges facing our planet.
