Palm Oil Washes Up at Holywell Bay Beach – Warning Issued
Coastguard Called to Remove Hazardous Substance
Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team was called to Holywell Beach on Thursday, 27th February, following reports of pollution washing up on the shore.
At 1620hrs, the team arrived and discovered a sizeable chunk of toxic palm oil. The substance was safely removed and placed in a secure location for collection by the council.
What Is Palm Oil and Why Is It Dangerous?
Palm oil is a type of vegetable oil widely used in food, cosmetics, and biofuels. Although harmless when processed for human use, solidified palm oil that washes up on beaches can be highly toxic, particularly when contaminated by fuel or other pollutants during its time at sea.
One of the biggest risks is to dogs, as they are often drawn to the waxy, white or yellow lumps due to its scent. If ingested, palm oil can cause:
- Severe vomiting and diarrhoea
- Dehydration
- Lethargy and abdominal pain
- Blockages in the intestines in extreme cases
Even small amounts can make a dog seriously ill, so owners are urged to keep their pets on a lead when walking on the beach if pollution is reported.
Community Effort in Cleanup
Holywell Bay Surf Life Saving Club and local residents assisted the coastguard team in safely dealing with the pollution. The coastguard thanked them for their help in handling the incident.
Authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious substances found along the coast and to take precautions, particularly with pets.
Stay safe and remain vigilant.
