Today, Newquay Orchard is abuzz with excitement as it hosts its much-anticipated Wassail celebration. The event, taking place from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm, is free for all and promises a blend of tradition, community spirit, and festive fun.

Embracing Tradition and Community

The Wassail at Newquay Orchard is more than just a gathering; it’s a deep-rooted tradition that harks back to the customs of Anglo-Saxon England and pagan rituals. The term “Wassail” comes from the Old English phrase ‘waes hael,’ meaning ‘good health.’ This event is a symbolic gesture to ward off winter spirits and toast to a fruitful harvest in the coming year.

A Day of Joyful Activities

Attendees can look forward to a variety of activities. The day kicks off with face painting, live entertainment, willow weaving, and a traditional singalong starting at 12:30 pm. A highlight is the special performance by The Clams, Newquay’s own all-female shanty singing group, at 1 pm.

The Community Wassail Parade

The heart of the event is the community Wassail parade, starting at 2 pm from the Heart and Soul Café. Participants will make their way through the Orchard, creating a joyful noise with pots and pans, a delightful ritual to dispel any bad spirits. The parade culminates with the Wassail Queen feeding the Wassail tree, pouring apple juice over its roots and adorning its branches with slices of toast. This act is an offering to welcome the good spirit, represented by the robin, and is followed by the collective singing of the Wassail song.

A Symbol of Hope and Good Health

Newquay Orchard’s Wassail is more than just a celebration; it’s a symbol of community, good health, and hope. It’s an opportunity for people to step into the New Year with warmth and togetherness, embracing the spirit of the season and the community.

This event is a testament to Newquay Orchard’s commitment to fostering community spirit and preserving traditional customs, making it a cherished occasion for all who attend.
