Why These Five Newquay Bars Just Earned Top Safety Status
Police in Newquay have backed the launch of a nationally recognised bar scheme designed to raise safety standards across the town’s nightlife. The programme, Best Bar None, focuses on how well venues protect customers, train staff and manage security, with a particular emphasis on the safety of women and girls.
First in Cornwall to Take Part
Newquay is the first town in Cornwall to run the scheme. Since its introduction in the spring, five businesses signed up for assessment and all achieved accreditation.
Certificates were handed out on Wednesday 19th November to Project 83, Sailors Arms, Walkabout, the Red Lion and Towan Blystra.
What the Scheme Checks
Best Bar None looks at a range of measures, including CCTV, staff training and how venues keep people safe once inside. The programme is independent and nationally accredited. While police in Newquay support it, all assessments are carried out by independent representatives.
Inspector Steve Johnson, who presented the certificates, said:
“Congratulations to all the businesses who have received an accreditation.
I believe that this scheme will be another factor in helping us all to create a safer and more welcoming night life experience in Newquay.
It’s encouraging to see that these businesses have all met the high-quality standards necessary, including the important safety measures to help keep their customers and staff safe.”
Police alcohol licensing officer Sue Edwards said:
“Not only does the assessment provide customers with reassurance, but it’s a useful way for businesses to find out how to improve customer safety and experience.”
Positive Reaction from Local Venue
Chris Hancock, representing the Sailors Arms, said:
“We are happy and proud to support Best Bar None and also to attain the level required for accreditation. We look forward to seeing the programme develop in the coming years as more and more businesses come on board.
It is very positive for the hospitality industry in Newquay. Thank you to everyone involved.”
