Wild Planet Trust Confirms Libéma to Take Over Paignton and Newquay Zoos

Two of the South West’s best loved attractions have been given a new lease of life after confirmation that Paignton Zoo and Newquay Zoo have found a new owner. Wild Planet Trust announced today that Dutch leisure company Libéma will take over both sites, securing their long term future after a period of uncertainty.

A new chapter for two iconic zoos

Wild Planet Trust, which has operated the zoos for decades, has been clear that new investment was needed. The news that both zoos were at risk of closure came as a surprise to many, given their long standing roles in the region. Paignton Zoo has been part of local life for more than a century, while Newquay Zoo has served its community for around half that time.

Interim CEO of Wild Planet Trust, Stephen Kings, said:
“This marks the start of an exciting new chapter for Paignton and Newquay Zoos as Libéma takes over the commercial operations of Wild Planet Trust from 2 January 2026. Under Libéma’s ownership, both zoos are not only guaranteed to survive but to thrive into the future. Libéma shares our commitment to animal welfare, conservation and hospitality, and we believe visitors will see significant new developments as a result.”

Under the agreement, Libéma will take over operations while Wild Planet Trust shifts its focus entirely to its conservation work in the UK and internationally. Although the zoos will no longer operate as charities, Libéma already supports 30 conservation efforts worldwide through its trust, Stichting Wildlife.

Chair of Wild Planet Trust, Sarah Barr, said the priority throughout the search for a new owner had been finding someone who would protect the zoos’ legacy. She said they were confident Libéma shared their passion for conservation and animal welfare.

Smooth handover planned

All current zoo employees will transfer to Libéma in January 2026, providing continuity for staff and animals. Over the coming weeks, both organisations will work closely together to ensure a smooth transition. Once complete, Wild Planet Trust will step back from day to day operations but will continue collaborating with Libéma on conservation work.

Libéma CEO Dirk Lips said the company had been looking to expand its activities in animal welfare, education, research and conservation. The company currently operates four zoos, including Beekse Bergen in the Netherlands.

“When the opportunity to invest in these two incredible zoos arose, we seized it with both hands. I feel very much at home in the UK and the staff in the zoos have made me feel very welcome. We therefore are very much looking forward to working together on the exciting plans we have for the zoos.”

What visitors can expect in 2026

Libéma has a track record of revitalising struggling zoos, transforming them into thriving attractions for learning and conservation. Both Paignton and Newquay are set for major upgrades.

Paignton Zoo plans

For 2026 the plans include:
• Improved routing connecting five theme areas
• Creation of a savannah with giraffes, zebras, wildebeests and antelopes
• Reintroduction of rhinoceroses
• A new enclosure for camels, vicunas, rheas and maras
• A new baboon rock for baboons and warthogs

Newquay Zoo plans

Newquay Zoo is set to gain its own savannah, which will include giraffes.

With a firm buyer in place and detailed plans already underway, both zoos look set to embark on significant changes that will shape their future for years to come.
