Yacht Spotted Drifting Off Newquay Sparks Lifeboat Launch
Skipper found safe after being spotted alone and adrift near Newquay
A drifting yacht spotted 20 miles northwest of Newquay on Monday afternoon (13th May) led to the launch of the St Ives RNLI all-weather lifeboat.
The vessel, named Nora Stachura, launched at 12.50pm after concerns were raised about a yacht seen under sail with no one visible on deck. A passing fishing boat had raised the alarm after noticing the unusual sight and fearing something might be wrong.
Skipper Found Safe
As the lifeboat crew approached the yacht, the skipper appeared from below deck. He was safe and well, having been down earlier to clear a rope from the propeller. However, the yacht still had no forward propulsion.
The skipper declined assistance and was able to manage the situation himself.
RNLI Reminder for Boaters
RNLI Coxswain Rob Cocking said:
“Our volunteer crew responded quickly to what could have been a serious incident. Thankfully, the skipper was safe. We remind all boaters to maintain engines, carry enough fuel and have the right tools and spares on board.”
The RNLI is encouraging anyone heading out to sea this summer to check their gear and be prepared. Boaters can download the RNLI’s essential boating checklists to help stay safe on the water.
