Are You Protecting Your Lungs This Winter? Essential Advice for Asthma and COPD Sufferers
With temperatures dropping, taking extra care of your lungs is crucial, especially if you or your child live with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The colder weather can tighten airways, making breathing more difficult, while babies are at increased risk of serious infections like respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
Expert Help at Hand
Pharmacist Judit Barta from Victoria Pharmacy in Threemilestone encourages those with respiratory conditions to seek advice:
“If you have a long-term condition such as asthma or COPD, you can always come and speak with a pharmacist. Our pharmacists are highly trained and can provide you with the health advice you need to stay well this winter,” Judit said.
“We can help explain what your medications are doing, how to take them, and the best way to take them to make sure you feel the benefits. We will also make sure there are no interactions with other drugs to prevent side effects.”
Simple Steps to Stay Well
Whether you’re managing asthma or COPD, or supporting a child with these conditions, here are eight essential tips to protect your respiratory health this winter:
- Keep Warm to Help Your Lungs: Cold air can make breathing difficult. Wrap a scarf loosely over your nose and mouth to warm the air before it reaches your lungs. Children with asthma should do the same.
- Protect Babies from RSV: Regular handwashing, keeping babies away from crowded places, and breastfeeding where possible can help boost their immune system.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water daily to keep mucus thin and clear your airways more easily.
- Rest and Relax: Stress can worsen symptoms. Prioritise sleep, relaxation, and activities like yoga or meditation.
- Follow Your Medication Plan: Stick to your asthma or COPD action plan, keep your inhalers close, and ensure you have enough medication throughout winter. Make sure your child’s asthma management plan is up to date.
- Create a Lung-Friendly Home: Use a humidifier to maintain moisture, keep your home clean to reduce allergens, and avoid exposure to smoke.
- Avoid Crowded Spaces: To reduce the risk of winter illnesses, avoid busy indoor areas. When necessary, wear a mask and maintain good hand hygiene.
- Watch for Early Signs of Infection: RSV in babies can cause coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. Seek medical advice if you notice these symptoms.
Could the Cold Be a Warning Sign?
The cold weather may highlight undiagnosed lung conditions. It is estimated that 3 million people in the UK have COPD, yet two-thirds remain undiagnosed. If cold weather triggers a persistent cough, phlegm, or shortness of breath, it’s advisable to visit your GP for a check-up.
